Chromium has several interrelated benefits.
1) Chromium is a component of Glucose Tolerance Factor, and aids in insulin utilization and blood sugar control. This explains its reputation for helping with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), Syndrome X and diabetes.
2) Because of its role in insulin utilization and blood sugar control, chromium supplementation seems to be very helpful in dealing with sugar and carbohydrate cravings. 3) Chromium supplementation may help control cholesterol. A new double-blind, placebo-controlled 8-week clinical trial in 113 patients diagnosed with atypical depression found that supplementation with chromium picolinate had significant anti-depressant effects in a patient sub-group with high levels of carbohydrate cravings. Patients with the highest level of carbohydrate cravings at baseline experienced the most significant clinical response to chromium supplementation. These findings built on results previously reported in a pilot study published in the Journal of Biological Psychiatry and conducted at the Duke University Medical Center Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

5) Chromium supplementation may also help with weight loss. Preliminary research in animals and humans suggested that chromium picolinate increases fat loss and promotes a gain in lean muscle tissue. So it’s good for those seeking to lose weight, and for people who are already working out in the gym trying to improve muscle tone. Double-blind research has also reported a reduction in body fat and body weight in people who took chromium supplements every day for three months.
