Single Vitamins

The word vitamin was coined by Polish biochemist Casimir Funk in 1912 to describe vital 'amines' or 'vitamines' - now spelled as 'vitamins' in English. He discovered that a specific amine based substance (which is now known as Vitamin B1) was the cause of beri-beri and he postulated, correctly, that it would be found that some other diseases were also caused by vitamin deficiencies.
